Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Christine Cohen (D) to represent the 12th Senate District of the CT General Assembly including the towns of Branford, Durham, East Haven, Guilford, Killingworth, Madison, Middlefield, North Branford. Voters have long relied on CTLCV's endorsements to identify candidates who will champion environmental protection. Senator Cohen has earned a 100% rating on CTLCV’s Environmental Scorecard for the 2024 session. She is among a handful of legislators who has been consistently honored by CTLCV as an “Environmental Champion”. Sen. Cohen has been a driving force behind some of the most impactful environmental legislation in recent years. As Chair of the Environment Committee for four years, she championed and successfully passed critical bills such as modernizing Connecticut’s landmark “Bottle Bill” recycling law, passing the Connecticut Clean Air Act to reduce vehicle emissions, banning single-use plastic bags, and adopting stronger restrictions on pesticides. These significant victories have solidified her reputation as one of Connecticut's most effective environmental leaders. Sen. Cohen now serves as Chair of the Transportation Committee and Vice Chair of Banking. Despite the shift in her roles, she remains one of the strongest environmental advocates in the legislature. In 2023 and 2024, she led efforts to require the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) to strengthen tree-cutting protocols and to establish a “carbon budget” to reduce polluting emissions from transportation projects. Along with Senate President Martin Looney, she pressured Tweed Airport to issue a full Environmental Impact Statement on the risks posed by the airport's proximity to vulnerable ecosystems. Looking ahead, Sen. Cohen will continue her work as Transportation Committee Chair to decrease carbon emissions from the transportation sector and support a smooth transition to electric vehicles that are an essential part of the fight against climate change. “Sen. Cohen has long been a top champion for environmental protection and clean air,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director. “Her steadfast leadership in advancing critical legislation and her ongoing efforts to reduce transportation emissions underscore her deep commitment to a sustainable future for Connecticut.” To receive CTLCV’s endorsement, all candidates must have completed a Survey on the Environment. Endorsements are issued based on a candidate’s responses, their voting record in our Scorecard, and their demonstrated leadership on specific issues. ### The CT League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) is a nonpartisan statewide organization dedicated to protecting Connecticut’s environment. CTLCV works to pass equitable and sustainable legislation that impacts our air, land, water, wildlife, and climate and holds all state legislators accountable with an annual Environmental Scorecard.
