Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Senator Jorge Cabrera (D) to represent the 17th Senate District including the towns of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck, and Woodbridge. In his first term, Senator Cabrera has consistently voted in support of priority environmental initiatives, and has earned high scores on CTLCV’s annual Environmental Scorecard. Jorge Cabrera came to the legislature in 2020 with a long history of community action, and a commitment to protect clean air and water for his district and future generations. Senator Cabrera enthusiastically put his efforts behind some of the most significant environmental wins our state has achieved in more than a decade. He was an effective voice for climate action in the Senate, calling for passage of groundbreaking legislation to reduce pollution from transportation and set emission standards for heavy duty vehicles, trucks and buses as part of the CT Clean Air Act. “This was a landmark year for climate action,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director. “These wins would not have been possible without lawmakers like Jorge Cabrera, who worked hard to pass legislation to reduce pollution that is damaging our health and our environment.” Last year, Senator Cabrera worked tirelessly with fellow environmental champions to update the state’s current recycling law known as the Bottle Bill. Looking ahead, he plans to revisit priority bills that did not pass this year, such as reducing styrofoam waste. He also wants to strengthen our state’s Environmental Justice laws to prevent the construction of new polluting facilities in the most vulnerable communities that are already overburdened by air pollution. “Senator Cabrera is a leader with the right values and is an effective voice at the legislature. We need Senator Cabrera at the Capitol to continue his good work,” said Brown. To receive CTLCV’s endorsement, all candidates must have completed a Survey on the Environment. Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Senator Tony Hwang (R) to represent the 28th State Senate District, including the towns of Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, Weston and Westport. Tony Hwang has consistently earned high marks on our Environmental Scorecard, with a perfect 100% in two of the last three Scorecards, and 90% in 2022. He has been featured as an “Environmental Champion” on CTLCV’s annual Scorecard for several years. “2022 was a landmark year for climate action. These wins would not be possible without lawmakers like Tony Hwang, who worked hard to pass legislation crucial to reducing pollution from transportation and are committed to the environment,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director. Tony Hwang is one of CTLCV’s strongest allies in the CT General Assembly. As a policymaker, he highly values bipartisan environmental leadership, open space preservation, and strong protections for Long Island. His active and vocal support for the environment was crucial in passing clean air legislation this session. Looking ahead, Senator Hwang plans to collaborate with advocates to draft and support legislation that will increase recycling rates, divert compostable food waste, and reduce new waste at the source. “Tony Hwang is a strong force in politics and environmental advocacy. He is committed to enacting policies that protect our land, air, water, and climate. We need him at the legislature to continue his leadership in the year ahead,” said Brown. Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Representative Mike Demicco (D) to represent the 21st House District of the CT General Assembly including the towns of Farmington and Unionville. For the past two years, Mike Demicco has earned a perfect 100% rating on our Environmental Scorecard and has consistently championed important legislation at the Capitol. “2022 was a phenomenal year for climate action. These wins would not be possible without lawmakers like Mike Demicco, who worked hard to pass legislation crucial to reducing pollution from transportation and are committed to the environment,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director. Mike Demicco serves on the Environmental Committee, the Public Health Committee, and the Energy and Technology Committee. His dedication to resolving our state’s environmental problems was critical to legislation banning single-use plastic bags and modernizing CT’s landmark recycling law, widely known as the “Bottle Bill.” Looking ahead, Representative Demicco plans to prioritize the much-needed updates to Connecticut’s Environmental Justice laws and to help find workable solutions to our state’s growing waste management crisis. “Representative Mike Demicco has a long, successful record of leadership on the most important environmental issues facing our state. We need him at the Capitol, where he will continue to lead his district and the state forward in the protection of our air, land, water and climate,” said Brown. Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Representative Raghib Allie-Brennan (D) to represent the 2nd House District of the CT General Assembly including the towns of Bethel, Danbury, Newtown, and Redding. Representative Allie-Brennan has earned a perfect 100% rating on CTLCV’s Environmental Scorecard for the last three years. “2022 was a phenomenal year for climate action. These wins would not be possible without lawmakers like Raghib Allie-Brennan, who worked hard to pass legislation to reduce pollution from transportation, and who are continually looking to improve the environmental policies of our state,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director. Raghib Allie-Brennan brought critical pieces of environmental legislation to the State House floor in the recent legislative session. This year, he championed the Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy Program (CPACE), which offers a tool to pay for zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and resiliency measures to address the climate crisis. He also helped secure wins for our state’s most significant environmental wins this year, the CT Clean Air Act and the Climate Change Mitigation Act. In 2021, he pushed for passage of legislation to ban single-use plastic bags, and helped to pass CT’s landmark recycling law, known as the “Bottle Bill.” Looking ahead, Representative Allie-Brennan’s work to restrict the use of the toxic chemical known as PFAS will continue, as will his work to improve our state’s outdated Environmental Justice laws. “Raghib Allie-Brennan is a young, enthusiastic, and committed lawmaker who effectively advocates for environmental rights. We need him at the Capital to push for strong environmental policies, and to call for state investments that tackle climate change,” said Brown. Hartford, CT – Today, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsed Representative Anne Hughes (D) to represent the 135th House District of the CT General Assembly including the towns of Easton, Redding and Weston. For the past two years, Anne Hughes has earned a perfect rating of 100% on CTLCV’s Environmental Scorecard. She is among a select group of state legislators who have been honored as an “Environmental Champion” for leadership on key climate legislation in 2022. It was a phenomenal year for climate action. These wins would not be possible without lawmakers who worked hard to pass legislation crucial to reducing pollution from transportation and are committed to the environment. Representative Hughes is a leader in the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus and the Progressive Caucus. She was at the forefront of climate legislation this year, passing the CT Clean Air Act and the Climate Change Mitigation Act, which take steps to reduce transportation emissions and transition Connecticut to 100% clean energy. She also voted for a budget that includes a climate change curriculum in public schools, promotes climate-smart agriculture practices, and supports education and training to reduce the use of road salt that contaminates our rivers and lakes. Looking ahead, Representative Hughes will push for greater state investments to manage our growing waste crisis. She will also continue to fight for stronger Environmental Justice laws to protect vulnerable communities from environmental harm caused by polluting facilities in their neighborhoods. “Anne Hughes is a strong, progressive leader for her district and the state. She is a fighter for what is right and fair, and we need her at the Capitol to continue her good work,” said Lori Brown, CTLCV Executive Director.
